Self-help: Preventing tick bites

Ticks are tiny, spider-like parasites that are difficult to see, and their bites often go unnoticed.

If you are walking or camping in tick-infested areas you should take the following precautions to minimize the risk of being bitten:

  • Wear light-coloured clothes, so that ticks can be seen more easily.
  • Keep your skin covered by wearing long sleeves and tucking trousers into socks.
  • Where there is vegetation, do not sit directly on the ground.
  • Whenever possible, keep to well-trodden trails and pathways, and avoid walking through overgrown vegetation.
  • While out walking, stop to make occasional checks for ticks, especially on children and dogs.
  • Before going to bed at night, carefully examine your own and your children's skin and clothing for ticks.
