Self-help: Preventing kidney stones
If you have kidney stones, these dietary precautions may help prevent their recurrence:

- Drink 2-3 litres (4-6 pints) of fluids daily.
- Drink fluids before going to bed to ensure that urine production continues overnight.
- Drink more fluids in hot weather, after strenuous exercise, or if you have a fever.
- Ask your doctor or dietitian if you should alter your diet, depending on what type of kidney stone you had.
- To prevent oxalate stones, avoid foods rich in oxalic acid, such as rhubarb, spinach, and asparagus.
