Self-help: Preventing bacterial cystitis
If you have had bacterial cystitis, the following measures can help you to avoid further attacks:

- Drink 2-3 litres (4-6 pints) of fluids each day. Drink even more in hot weather.
- Empty your bladder frequently and completely.
- Be careful about hygiene. After a bowel movement, wipe yourself from front to back to prevent bacteria around the anus from entering the urethra.
- Wash your genital area before sexual intercourse. Make sure your partner washes, too.
- Pass urine shortly after having sexual intercourse.
- Use unperfumed toiletries and avoid vaginal deodorants.
- Do not use a diaphragm or spermicide for contraception.
