Self-help: Maximizing your chance of conception
The overall health of both partners has an important effect on fertility.

- Make sure your weight is in or near the normal range (see Are you a healthy weight?).
- Eat a healthy diet.
- Do not smoke.
- Cut down on alcohol, which is known to reduce the sperm count and can damage the fetus if pregnancy occurs.
- Have sex every day at the woman's most fertile time, in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
- Try not to worry, because stress can lower your fertility. Learn relaxation exercises to lower your stress levels.
- Men should avoid taking hot baths or using saunas.
