Self-help: Managing eczema in children

Parents play an important role in managing eczema in their children, helping to control symptoms and to keep their child comfortable.

  • Avoid perfumed skin products.
  • Wash your child with emollient cream instead of soap.
  • Bathe your child at least once a day using moisturizing bath oil.
  • After washing, moisturize your child's skin with a chilled emollient cream.
  • Use prescribed corticosteroid ointments regularly on the affected areas of skin.
  • If your child scratches, make sure his or her fingernails are cut short and he or she wears cotton mittens at night.
