Self-help: Living with asthma
Without doubt, the single most important aspect of controlling your asthma is the careful and planned use of drug treatments.

However, there are several things that you can do to reduce your risk of an attack and to decrease the severity of your symptoms:
- Do not smoke and try to avoid polluted or smoky atmospheres.
- Take regular exercise to improve your stamina. Swimming is a particularly beneficial form of exercise. Avoid exercising outside when it is cold because this may provoke an attack.
- Avoid substances that are likely to provoke an allergic response; do not keep furry animals as pets if you are allergic to them.
- Always carry a reliever inhaler, and be sure that you take medication with you on holiday.
- If your attacks are triggered by stress, try to practise relaxation exercises.
